The Simonsound

Definitely one to pre-order. A book covering the history of the BBC’s Radiophonic Workshop has been a long time coming. There is Radiophonic Workshop co-founder Desmond Briscoe’s First Twenty Five Years: BBC Radiophonic Workshop if you have £141 to spare (the Tone Generations Ian Helliwell found his copy at a carboot sale!)

Anyway, it remains to be seen how good this new book will be but it certainly looks promising.

Special Sound traces the fascinating creation and legacy of the BBC’s electronic music studio, the Radiophonic Workshop, in the context of other studios in Europe and America. The BBC built a studio to provide its own avant-garde dramatic productions with experimental sounds “neither music nor sound effect.”
